Need help wiping out drive

Ok I just got a computer from a friend who didn't give me any software with it. The only thing I know is it has a virus. I've tried installing avg but it freezes and everytime I do a search the search brings me to a different site like it also has spyware . I want to format the drive but windows xp media center won't let me. Is there a way to wipeout the whole drive and install vista?
I'm looking for a free solution as I have no money right now. Thanks

u have to format it through a disc. get an XP/Vista disc, put it in your drive bay. restart comp, select boot order either from bios or on screen so that the dvd/cd drive boots first, then once it boots from the disc, you can reformat and kill that virus.

there's always a free solution for OS's, but i would never condone such behaviors!

You can install Vista and delete the partition at installation time. You should also be able to do it with Windows XP as long as you boot from the installation CD and perform a complete installation.

Thanks that did it now the computer runs like new. Not bad for free
