When I make a change and save it, the document turns to sans serif
immediately. If I then exit and call the document back up, as with this
one, it is again in Palatino. This is maddening.
Why is it changing font on me merely because I am saving it, and
then making me exit and call it up again in order to proceed? I do not
like to wait till the whole document is finished being cleaned up before
saving, because if the power went out, I would lose all changes. This is
not working the way it ought to.
Please suggest how to proceed.

Is your Palatino font registered in the Windows registry? All fonts must be registered, even if they sometimes work anyway. Look for it here.....

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Fonts

If it is not registered, click "File" then "Add Font" and point to the font file wherever you have put it. Make sure you check the box that says "Copy fonts to Fonts folder"
