I am on the hunt of building my first Gaming/Media PC. I want to start with the Q6600 Intel quad. I will be mostly using this for editing videos and also my son will be on the "fly" using it as his gaming PC. I am new here and want to thank everyone in advance.
Forgot to mention that I don't want to go over $800. Thanks

For encoding, rather try the Phenom II. According to Anandtech, Phenom II's encoding speed is much better than Q6600... Just get the 920...

Actually, the i7 920 is even faster in encoding according to that anandtech review, but I don't think you will be able to get a good build with either the i7 or phenom 920 for $800. Go for the q6600.

Processor: Q6600
Motherboard: P45
Hard Drive: wd6400aaks
PSU: Corsair CMPSU 750TX
RAM: Whatever is on the qvl for the motherboard, you pick
Graphics Card: HD 4850
Case: Antec 900
Heatsink: Xigmatek S1283

You mentioned this was also a media pc....do you need a sound card? Will you be playing music from the computer?

You might wanna save some cash. $800 is alot for a computer, with the i7 (It needs DDR3 not DDR2). Also, I'd recommend onboard audio. They're pretty good these days and its had to justify buying that extra X-Fi.

You didn't mention if you need an operating system or a monitor(let me know if you do I will make another list). Here is what I have without either of those:

Monitor? OS system? I am not exactly sure what you mean. I will use my own monitor. I Will build from barebone up. I will most likely get the shell and Power at my local Fry's. Thanks

He means OS as in Operating System, aka Windows. If you want a true media PC though you will need either Vista or XP Media Center. Vista has the Media Center built in.

Oh and with a setup like that you might as well check out the LG Super Blu Ray drive. Its only $100 bucks (maybe less now) and will be able to play HD Blu Ray movies.
