One of the things driving me crazy was whether to go with the NV9800GTX or the Radeon4850, from what I read they are both pretty much the same. I think overall though this is a solid setup for the price, the only thing I'm unsure of is the motherboard, but I can't get anything better for the price. So tell me, can I do any better with 800$?
What resolution do you plan to be playing at? Do you think you'll ever want to add a second graphic's card into the system in the future? Are you going to be running a 64bit OS to take advantage for the extra ram you want?
If you can answer these questions, I can proceed to point you in the right direction.
Yeah I plan on going 64 to fully utilize the ram in the future, and I may end up going SLI. The resolutions will be relatively low for the time being until i get a new monitor, my current monitor goes up to 1280x1024 but that's locked at 60Hz. 1024x768 allows up to 85Hz.
get the GTX+
the EVGA 750i ftw (better pci slot spacing and much more)
pc power & cooling silencer 750w (upgradability and stability)
case (Antec 300, CM 690, Antec 900)
and get an aftermarket heatsink if youre overclocking
Well if don't plan on going any higher than 22" resolution, a P45 board with a 4850 would probably be best. The Crossfire scaling at that resolution is decent, but you probably wouldn't encounter bandwidth issues in the 2 8x lanes should you choose to add another 4850 in the future. If you are worried about that bit, you could try to rearrange your build for a X38 motherboard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but would a Corsair TX650w be fine for two 4850 in CF?
I found another board I might go with, I don't plan on overclocking and would rather not go SLI this seems to fit the bill quite well and it's cheap PCIx2.0.
Oh for sure, if you don't want to do multiple graphics cards, that board is good. You should change the graphics card and the power supply to the ones I listed though. Umm, the Centurion 5 was fine when I used to own it, I switched to a nicer Lian Li case, but eh, that's me. The Cent. 5 can be a little tight to work in, but it's not too bad by any means.
Thanks a lot for the input, I feel a lot more comfortable with the setup now. Only thing is reviews say the fan on that sapphire 4850 is extremely loud.
You could go with a different model that offers a better solution. Personally, I have a Zalman VF900 on my 8800GT, it runs at near 8V and is dead silent, not to mention the fact that highest load temp I saw with a high OC on the card was < 65C
So that you can crossfire your 4850 for better performance at a latter date. If you want to overclock then I suggest adding an aftermarket cooler, but the stock cooler will be fine if you are only going to do light overclocking or run it at stock speeds.

Well I want to thank everyone again for the input it helped out a lot, I think I have everything set now. I switched to a crossfire board just in case, and went with the sapphire 4850. I've read it runs much cooler than most cards in it's class. Should be purchasing everything within the week, Hopefully I'll be posting from my new setup soon.
Pro: You can get better frames and more computing power at the same time with $800
Con: You have to be open to the 'other' chip maker
Benches, non TRI SLI set up

well see, AMD sucks.... its not an opinion, they just plain suck
intel beast amd in everything but graphics. nvidia gets raped by amd in that category. but for gaming, intel dual cores r best
See some people act like 12 year olds and shoot their mouths off - they just do regardless of age I hope to give alternative build ideas backed with facts and benches as i always do in other forums i am a member of but such people make this a less respectable forum IMO
