I want to discontinue using my laptop with a router and just use my desktop with modem as before. I disconnected the router and plugged the phone jack back into the modem like it was before I hooked up the router, but it says I don't have an internet connection. Does it have to reset overnight?

No it doesn't take time to reset. You should be able to plug the phone-line into the modem and then the modem into a router, and then run an ethernet from the router to your computer.
