I am considering installing an old ATI All-in-Wonder 128 AGPx2 card in an AGPx4 slot. Can anyone tell me if I am liable to blow the board or AGP socket or will it just run at AGPx2 speed. The board is a D1214 in a Fujitsu Siemens Scenic T and has an Intel 815e chipset. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Should be no problems with speeds, AGP, like PCI-E is backwards compatable (old stuff works on newer stuff)
Just one point check the AGP voltages, can`t remember the numbers off the top of my head but there are two and they are NOT compatable.
You may have to do a bit of Googling on this point and I`m probably being overcautious since I think the lower voltage only applies to the first AGP cards and slots...But you never know.
Been off to check Wikipedia. The AGP 2X uses 3.3V while the AGP 4X uses 1.5v and it also states that in most cases motherboards and cards are keyed to prevent a mismatch but warns that not everyone followed the rules My advice is, no, do n`t do it.
If its an 8x/4x slot, it won't work. If its an 4x/2x slot, your fine. Either way, they are notched differently, and the one won't fit in the other. If it fits, it will work.
