Hi! I'd like to add a HD 3650 AGP to my P4 system. I don't want it for gaming but for programming in DX10.

I have the following system:

- ATX PSU with +12V rail: 18A. (which are surely not sustained) Specs
--------------------------------------------------------------------
- Pentium 4 2,53 GHz socket 478 (northwood)
- Intel D865Perl mobo
- Radeon 9200 AGP
- 512MB DDR
- DVD
- HDD IDE 7200rpm
- CPU Fan + Case Fan
- 2 USB plugged
--------------------------------------------------------------------
- CD-RW
- Floppy disk
- 1 Cathode
- 1 USB plugged
- Ethernet PCI card
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Power consumption 90% of load: 207 W (according to http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine)

I thought to still use my generic PSU, taking out the last components:

- Pentium 4 2,53 GHz socket 478 (northwood)
- Intel D865Perl mobo
- HD 3650 AGP
- 2 512MB DDR sticks
- DVD
- HDD IDE 7200rpm
- CPU Fan + Case Fan
- 2 USB plugged
Power consumption 90% of load: 185W

In the 3650's specs, a power supply with 30A in the +12V rail is recommended, but I think that's for the whole system.

I know a good PSU (good brand, enough power in the +12V rails, high efficiency, etc...) is really important, but my PC is so old... Do you think that's going to work out?

Thanks!

Hey. your 400w generic psu should be fine.
ati and geforce usually over rate the psu requirments to make sure that the pc will run stably.
with your pc specs the psu should ample.
you must also remember that the 3650 uses new technology and a small die therefor it does not consume alot of power anyways. Since you will not be gaming ur cpu will not be exposed to high load for long periods of time which can cause excess heat which will cause failure.

hope this helped
