Did you look through the menu on your TV? Mine you have to select
HDMI-PC

Ya the TV will have to be on the right input. example: HDMI1 or HDMI2

you may need to go with DVI to HDMI cable, sometimes the adapters just wont work. It sucks, but my brother had an issue like yours.
