Computer Under Performing

Long story short...

My computer was freezing randomly. I googled the problem and found somebody else had it on the mushkin memory forum. One of the mushkin admins told me since I had "performance ram" I couldn't run it from the default settings and have it work properly. He gave him a few bios commands and it fixed the problem.

Jumper Free Configuration
Memory Clock Mode: Manual
Memclock Value: 667
DRAM Timing Mode: Both
TCL: 6
TRCD: 6
TRP: 6
TRAS: 18
Memory Overvoltage: 1.85V - 1.95V

Problem is, it seems to have hindered or somehow limited my graphics. My 3dmark06 benchmark went down from 16k to 15k, my furmark1.7 went from 6k to 5k, and I don't get steady 100 fps in a game like cs 1.6 that's 10 years old.

I want to get the best graphical performance I can since I'm a gamer. Are there bios commands to help me achieve that? Do I need to overclock? Are there other tactics I can try?

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955
VC: XFX Radeon HD 4890
MOBO: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Power: CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W ATX12V V2.2

Reinstall drivers/bios? BTW, Cs 1.6=Win.

I do have another question for anybody who might know. I wanted to make sure my RAM placement was correct on my mother boad. The following link is a picture of my mobo.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImag...

I currently have 1 stick in the far right black slot, and the 2nd stick in the closest blue slot.

Change it so that you are using the same color slots for both sticks of memory.

A single stick of RAM can go into any slot.

A pair goes into either blue slots or black slots.

Two pairs go into blue and black slots.

^+1.... Didnt you get a book with your motherboard? That would be the best reference IMHO. But he is right considering the colors are next to each other instead of alternating.

I don't know about those BIOs command, until you completely exhaust your options, I wouldn't even consider screwing with the BIOs. Are you running on a single core PC? How fast is that running? How much FPS do you get in CS 1.6?, I've played it for 3 years competitively and I ran into a ton of issues.

Your board supports 1600 OC..... that means if you OC your Processor and the other DIY stuff...... then you can use the 1600 at it's Native speed.
If you don't OC the rig, then than the RAM is going to function at 1333 and that is probably why it's under performing.....

System performance with only ram speed as the difference, such as between 1333 and 1600, will not cripple a computer in comparison. The slots are more likely to blame than anything else at this point.

yea, mine are set to 1600, but they do perform at 1333. Any ideas on how i can increase that? I have read on overclocking etc, but i still dont understand.... ;oP

Like your setup, which is actually running, not what you have OC'ed it upto. The original models of the hardware I meant.

MB-MSI 980a
CPU- Phenom II x4 955
RAM- 8gb G.Skill ripjaw 1600 pc12800 - /which runs at 1333 prolly cause the voltage or the latency needs to be changed.
GPU-GTX 280 SLI'd

Nothing is overclocked cept my video cards to match each other.

Surprisingly GSkill doesn't list the MSI 980A as a compatible Mobo or as they have put it "Qualified Motherboard".
I'd suggest you look for a newer Bios if they have released one and if not. Then try to manipulate the stepping in the CAS RAS timing , one step at a time.
Don't jump too much or BSODS become inevitable if you manage to boot up.
Watch out for temps and voltages at the same time.

Here's a link if you really want to change it and do a little bang for your buck kind of thing.

All though the guides here at Toms are more informative and easy to follow, you can still try that one too.
