4870 is the better choice. Although if price matters, get the 512mb version instead. It performs the same in normal resolutions, and is much cheaper ($215 with mir). There's also 9800gx2, outperforms gtx280 while also cheaper ($275, no rebates).
Personally, I wouldn't touch a GTX 260 for the price. More or less, to me, it'd boil down to the question of whether you primarily use AA or not. If you do, go for the HD 4870, since its efficiency with AA bests anything nVidia has ever made. If you don't, though, go for the GeForce 9800GX2, which in such cases can usually beat out even the GTX 280, which is rather embarassing given how inexpensive the 9800GX2 is.
I totally agree. Nvidia have got their pricing all wrong. The 9800GX2 even benchmarks higher than the 4870, altho Nottheking is right, if you want go AA go with ATI all the time. If no dont bother with the GTX 260, get something like the GTX 280 or the 9800GX2
260GTX has less power consumption , less noise , better and good looking , less heat , BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT the last factor is MONEY.It is more expensive and it is more important for us that do not have money...
ill be getting gtx 260 sli, not the 216 core, the old one...
they are $220 and include farcry 2 at newegg...
even when the 4870 beats it for a little bit, nvidia cards usually have higher minimum frames than ati cards and good avg frames overall...
i just sold my x48 and 4870 to change to a x58 and nvidia cards...
ati is a good way to go too they have very nice prices so it depends in what u play... i wouldnt go for a 9800gx2 because a lot of ppl report issues with it and its getting phased out...
9800gx2 means trouble nvidia will stop releasing drivers to improve and it gets very hot... both the 4870 and the gtx 260 are better options...
the 9800gx2 has very high frames in some games but in many of them works as an underclocked 8800gts so i wouldnt get it...

Did you miss the new benchmarks I linked earlier, which using the new 180.48 driver that was just released?
I heard that if you wanted to sli the older 260 you could run into burnout problems. Has anyone else heard about this or did i just happen to hear it from the one angry guy that recieved a faulty card. So yeah has anyone sli'd the gtx260 for 170 on newegg cause if it works that what i think im going to get.
no... as a matter of fact i do not own one, im just replaying to the asking for help from what i have read very often... according to many owners except u two 9800gx2 means trouble...

If they hate it so much how likely are they to own it?
A sapphire 4870 will be better because the gtx 260 is a GDDR3 card vs the sapphire 4870 witch is a GDDR5 twice as fast even on a PCI express 1.0 mother board and the core clock and memory clock is usually 50 to 100 mhz faster then the GTX 260. so having 512 or 1gb of memory on the GTX 260 is rather deceiving because on the 4870 because it is gddr5 memory that's like 2gb of memory on a 1gb card the same with a 512mb card!!!
