Temperature anomaly

So, I have a Core i5 750. I had it overclocked to 3.46ghz. Idle temps were around 30-35C while Prime95 heavy load temps were 50-55.

A couple of times, I've started up the computer to see temperatures quickly rise to 80-100C, which scared the life out of me, and this is on liquid cooling. I put it back down to stock voltage and clock speeds, and it was showing idle temps of 50-55C, then instantly dropped to 19-25C out of nowhere.

Does it sound like it was a horribly unstable overclock, or maybe a faulty thermometer?

  1. Sounds almost as if there's air in the lines or the pump is acting up.
