Why cant I make IE8 my default web browser in XP

I'm unable to set my IE8 browser as default in XP

  1. Do you happen to have installed Chrome or Firefox at some point? I have found that they like to grab associations to web pages and not give them up.

  2. Open IE8. Go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Programs Tab.
    Right in the middle part will be a button to make IE8 the default browser
  3. Also, if you have other browsers installed, they usually have an option for "check that I'm the default browser" or something close to that. Make sure they are not checked otherwise they will become the default browser the next time they are launched.
