4850x2 versus 2 9800GTX+s

This is sort of a different thread and i wanted a quick answer

I recently build a workstation for my dad to do reading at home.
It has 2 9800GTX+s that are not SLId and running 3 monitors between the 2

But now the 4850x2 is out with 4 DVIs and at a pretty good price. Would the performance for one of those be similar to 2 separate 9800?

Any input would be great

More about 4850x2 versus 9800gtx
  1. I would go for HD 4850X2
  2. Of course it would outperform dual 9800gtx+. One 4850 performs the same as one 9800gtx+, but since sli is off, it's really 2 4850s compared to one 9800gtx+. The performance difference will be very large.

Look into 180s drivers for your dad's machine. It supposedly enable multiple monitors for sli, in which case it should perform the same as 4850x2.

  3. No i didnt give him an SLI board
Intel chipset, i hate Nvidia chipsets (bad experience with 590)

So even though 1 (gpu) card is powering 3 (4850x2) versus 2 cards powering 3 ill still get better performance on the x2?

4850x2 is not one gpu, it's 2 gpus put into one card. And since there is no possibility of sli, then yes, 4850x2 will definitely perform better than 9800gtx+.
  5. O rofl my bad i meant 1 card.
I knew it was a 2gpu card my bad.

Yea ok thats what i thought. So 4850x2 it is.
    Thx for the help guys

That is the exact opposite. :na:
  8. Only for the HDs it is

I wouldve gotten my dad 2 4850s but as stated in my previous thread, heat was a problem cause its in a P182 and no aftermarket coolers came stock yet
