New rig showing wrong amount of hdd space

Hi guys, I just got my new rig install but the amount of space I have is only 131gb. My hdd is a wd raptor 300gb 10krpm and I'm running xp pro. I got the hdd from newegg and it was the oem version. can someone please help me out. thanks

btw, i decided to reformat to see if my space would come back and it didnt. now instead of 289 i only have 131 from the installation screen.

You need at least XP SP1 to see more than 131GB of HDD space. I'm guessing your XP disk does not include any service packs, correct? You can read up on slipstreaming service packs into your XP disk.

My copy of XP is very old. I receive it when I was going to college; every student in my school got a real copy of XP. So i'm guess all I need to do is reinstall and dl sp1?

Okay, what version of xp pro do you have?? If I remember right if you have an older version SP1 or before the OS doesn't recognize any HD over 130 gb's. If you update your OS to SP2/3 than the OS will recognize the bigger HD, but you'll have to do a couple of things after the update.
Here is what you'll need to do:
* Go and click on the START button
* Go to Administrative Tools
* Computer Management
* Disk Management
* And then format the unformatted portion of your HD. This will give you the 2nd partition, which will be what is left on the rest of your HD.
