Last night, I was on the internet on my Dell desktop just fine. This morning, my internet stopped working. It says I have no connection in the icon in my bottom right tray. I noticed that my desktop's ethernet port's lights (orange and green) don't turn on anymore. Is this a sign of broken hardware - damaged ethernet port? Using the same wire and modem, my laptop's internet works just fine.

I've already tried:

- start > run > cmd > ipconfig /release - but it says I must have a connection before I can do this
- reinstalled all the drivers that came with the PC
- restarted the DSL modem
- restarted the computer

I have had the same problem and solved it by either rebooting or putting pc in sleep mode then waking. Once the Ethernet port light (green) goes off the only way to get it to come back on and working again is to do what I mentioned in the first sentence.

you can disable the ethernet card from going into low power mode. this will prevent this in the future.

goto device manager. select ethernet card. properties powermanagement.

one way to reinitialize the card is to disable it in the bios and reenable it. after a reboot.
