Hello everybody,
I am extremely new to the world of PC gaming and I have been spending vast amounts of time looking through forums and videos and gaining a basic knowledge on the components of a PC. I apologize if this is a newb question but I have to learn somehow. Can you upgrade from a dual core to a quad core without switching motherboards easily, or is the perimeter of a quad core CPU larger than a dual core CPU?

Yes and no, depending on what hardware you have. Most boards support both, but there are compatibility issues between different generations of products.

Someone would have to know exactly what hardware you already had before they could tell you exactly what hardware you could upgrade to.
