Shrinking Factory image drive

Drive(D)the factory image drive is filling up (where the OS is)down from 16GB to 1.47GB but I have not stored anything there. What's happening, there is still 500GB+ free of 680GB+ on my C drive and I plan to upgrade to Win 7. I have Intel core i7 w/x58 chipset running Vista 64bit home premium and a 750GB HD
