Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

When you click on one of them, does it open with its "proper" programme or display in IE?

All occurances will not open. Either it says I don't have permission to execute a system command or it shows an internet address. The title of the column in History is ínternet address' and if I run over it with the mouse the file info comes up with - http:///C:/ etc and %#### between each word in folder and file headings. Also there are IE5 coded files that hold info. I do not use IE at all. I use Firefox for a browser.

You have malware and it needs to be removed. Start by de-cluttering to make scanning easier – download CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com and use that to remove all the old rubbish and Internett history.

Run whichever anti-virus you use and in addition, go to http://www.malwarebytes.com and download MalwareBytes. Install and update it then restart into Safe Mode with Networking by tapping Function 8 before Windows loads. Run the full scan in safe mode and remove anything it suspects.

Restart into Normal Mode and go to http://www.dougknox.com , find the XP Tips and XP Fixes and download the Registry fix for .EXE files and .LNK problems. Double click on each once downloaded and they will sort out the message you’re seeing. The entries in Recent may be beyond recall but the originals should still be intact.
