Hey all-

I am considering starting an account in SWG. I am a long time player of EQ
and am currently getting bored with EQ2. In your opinion do you feel SWG is
on the same difficulty level as EQ2 and EQ? I have a friend that plays SWG
that feels the two games are different enough that SWG would be hard to
learn. I would appreciate your comments before investing in the game so I
can make the right choice. I would go for the SWG total experience but as
money is kinda tight I am doing my best to think this thing through.

Thank you!

I haven't played EQ2. I played EQ long ago and quit because I was bored to
tears. I'm approaching 2 years with SWG at this point (September).

Right after the Combat Upgrade earlier in the year, people were derogatorily
calling the new SWG "EQ in space". As such, I suspect it has a degree of
similarity to EQ/EQ2.

If you're a die hard star wars fan, be aware that while the game is set in
the Star Wars Universe, it's more of a SW RPG that the GM has kinda chosen
to change the setting a bit. The game takes place in the time between A New
Hope and Empire Strikes Back. But there are A LOT of Jedi about. Sadly,
most of them seem to be played by adolescents who think that running around
the starport showing off their lightsabers is the height of what Force Users
should do in this time period. Also, there are quite a few artifacts from
the Clone Wars era which have just become available (due to the 2nd
Expansion Episode 3: Rage of the Wookiees). If these 2 disconnects from
standardly conceived continuity don't bother you, then you might be okay
with the setting.

Is it fun, I think so. You have a lot of options from being an entertainer
who's sole goal in the game is to chat with people and dance/play music or
be a plastic surgeon/beautician hybrid. To being a crafter who makes
clothes or furniture or weapons, armor, even star ships. You can also be a
Melee or Ranged combat specialist. You can also slog through the rather
long, boring grind to become a Jedi as well.

Personally, I find it fun. My roommate and I have recently purchased Guild
Wars since there's no subscription fee and I prefer to play SWG to GW almost
all of the time. If you're planning on keeping your EQ or EQ2 subscription,
you may want to look at getting a Station Pass which is I think about $22
for all of SOE's games. You can get the new Total Experience Package with
the Original SWG, Jump to Lightspeed and Rage of the WOokies for about $30
which has the first month free obviously. So it may be worth your time to
try if what I've said hasn't turned you off to the game.

If you have Station Access then the cost per month will still be the same.
However, unless you can get in a good guild SWG is very boring

Well, I've played everquest and world of warcraft.. In light of these i
don't find SWG any harder or easier to learn.. like any MMO you have to get
a feel for it when you first start playing but once you do it comes
naturally..
As for game play, the SWG community has a completely different feel to it
then EQ or WoW ever did, its more like a community (at least on valcyn) then
a game of uber raiding guilds who only want the best stuff.. it just has a
lot more laid back easier atmosphere that i find far more appealing..
As for the person who said you need a "good guild" to have any fun. That's
entirely not true, you just need a nice social guild which almost any guild
in the game fits that profile.. All you need is a nice group of people to
work with and you can do just about *anything* in the game, unlike EQ or WoW
where you need guilds of 100's to be able to do the high end content. You
can also get pick-up groups on certain planets (Kash, Tatooine, Dantooine,
Correllia are usually the hotspots on valc).
It is easier in terms of the fact the game is designed to cater for both the
avid gamers as well as the social gamers, it doesn't take months and months
to master a profession only a few weeks (even less if your a power gamer).
And theres a lot of fun features like player housing and plenty of items you
can collect to decorate your house, cantina's for socialising with the
entertainers. And crafting professions that actually make sense if your one
who isn't out for fighting/hunting. And then of course theres space - Any
character, crafter, hunter, soldier or otherwise can also be a pilot in
space.
Basically if your a fan of Star Wars and you like MMO's there's no reason
why you shouldn't be able to find something within the game that suits you.
