As far as HDD's goes, I have an 80Gb raptor I will throw in it to get me started. I will be running a copy of XP SP3. And as for the Video card, I have an old ATI 9800 pro card 128mb, but it has a DVI output that will work nicely with my DVI to hdmi cable.

This pc will serve me mainly, hooked up to my Samsung LN46A750 46" LCD. I mainly plan to stream Netflix View instantly movies to start then I will add a card for recording shows. There will be no gaming on this, stricly for viewing movies, and no blu-ray as I already own a samsung blu-ray player. This will be my second build and I am fairly excited about it, being that I loved building my first earlier this year. If you recommend any changes please explain why. If not thanks for checking my build. Thanks guys.

More about htpc build whaddya think
  1. I'd say the CPU and amount of RAM are serious overkill for a system that will just be used for viewing movies. I'd go with just an AMD 790G motherboard (and scrap the GPU entirely), any AM2 dual-core CPU, 2 Gig of RAM and probably drop to a lesser power supply.

Maybe save around $100-$125 or there abouts.

    -Wolf sends
  2. +1^ Your chosen CPU, RAM, and PSU are overkill for an HTPC.

Maybe wait a couple weeks and get one of the new GeForce 9300 motherboards with an intel E5200. Or go the AMD route as wolf suggests. You could maybe save even more if you select a motherboard with onboard optical out so you won't need the sound card too.

With the money saved you could get a nice HTPC case that will look like AV equipment... and maybe even get a bundled remote..
  3. 2GB of ram would be more than enough and as WOLFSHADW said I would also recommend a 790GX and not use your old GPU. Af for the PSU it will be more than you need but most Low power PSU are crap as they are not really silent. cpu is also overkill I would recommend a e7300 but is the price difference is not that big you might want to stick with it.

The parts you chose out are pretty good if you'd get a better GPU ATI HD4670 you could also play games on that system.
  4. +1 as well. You should check out the articles over at for their reviews of the motherboards for htpc. Also check out avsforum to find their reccomendations as well.
  5. Will do fellas, thanks. I am gonna do some more research on cpu/mobo combos and report back. Thanks again.
  6. Ok so here are the revisions I am making to the budget htpc I am building. I also ditched the sound card, cause this mobo, has onboard hdmi, and optical out. I realize that even this power supply is probably more than i need, but I just don't feel comfortable buying a low power off brand name ps. Besides This ps will allow for future upgrades. I will probably add some monster hdd's a little at a time, and probably a tuner card or two.
I know nothing about AMD, please look it over and let me know if my selections are compatible. I will upgrade the case at a later date, all I am concerned about at this point, is that the cpu/mobo combo is good, and compatible. Now whaddya think?
