I just finished assembling my first build and seem to have a bad PSU. When I turn the system on, the button on my PCI mouse lights up but that's it - none of the fans come on, nor the hard drive or dvd drive.

The assembly went smoothly - I took my time and I'm fairly certain all components are seated properly and all the power connections are made. Does anyone have any suggestions for things that I can do to confirm it's the PSU? Unfortunately I don't have a multimeter handy.

Needless to say I'm disappointed.

The system:
mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R
cpu: Intel Q6600
psu: Corsair TX650W
video: Gigabyte HD 4850
case: Antec Nine Hundred
memory: Mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2-800
hard drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
dvd: Asus DRW-2014L1T

Make sure you got both the 24pin and 4/6 pin going to the mobo plugged in. Also check to make sure your power switch wire is in the right spot on the mobo, its small down there so check carefully. If its in the right spot, try flipping it over and see if it was a polarity issue.

If you have another computer, try putting this PSU in that one and see if it turns on. If it does, than your case wiring or power switch may be bad. If it doesn't, than the PSU is bad which happens. RMA it and try again, you'll get it.

This mobo has a 24-pin and a 2x4-pin connector. I'll double-check the connections, and the PWR connector polarity.

According to the Corsair web site, I can try shorting the green and black pins in the 24-pin connector to see if the fan comes on.

If your power switch connector is on the proper 2 pins, you do not need to worry about polarity. All the power and reset switches do are create a temporary short between the two poles. When I test a motherboard out of case I use my pipe tool to short them.

I always do an out of case build to make sure what I have works, ram, video cpu and psu with the motherboard on a wood table.

Hummm 12volts not working. Short the green wire and a black wire on the 24 pin connector to see if the PSU fan comes on. If it comes on turn off the PSU at the main power switch on the PSU.

If the PSU fan comes on then reconnect every thing make sure you have everything connected to it's proper place. I have seen what you have described happen because the Heat Sink Fan was connected to the wrong socket.

I unconnected all power connections, shorted the green and black wires and the fan came on. I reconnected everything and I'm up and running - the system recognizes everything. The CPU temp is good. I'm now in the process of installing Vista.

There must have been a connector that was not seated properly, despite the care I took when hooking things up the first time.

Thanks for all the help.
