How do I open pictures that don't show on the screen but have a little box
with red X in the corner?

It's a little difficult to be sure, since you don't indicate what
application you are atempting to view the images with.

One application that commonly displays a red "X" in the upper left
corner of where an image should be is Microsoft's Internet Explorer web
browser. The red "X" indicates that the file containing the image is not
available to the application. This may be the result of a missing or
corrupt image file, an error in the page's code or an inability to
access the drive or computer the image is stored on. When Internet
Explorer ia attempting to display an image located on a remote computer,
the red "X" will appear if the remote computer is temporarily offline of
the local computer is not connected to the internet.

Some computers are configured to open .jpg , .jpeg , and .gif files (all
images/pictures) directly (without a web page) with Internet Explorer.

It happens in both IE and my Outlook Express. Not all images come through
this way. Only some do.

Just wondering what I can do to open them. If it means the image really
isn't there, then the answer is probaby: nothing!

SP2 blocks images with possible spyware tags, basically
anything that uses an HTML tag to call the picture. Just
right click the red X and select Show Picture. Often when
people send an email they do not have a path to the imbedded
picture, so just the placeholder is sent.

OE blocks images automatically. At the top of the email will be a bar you
can click to display the image.

In IE it is usually due to bad image links on the server, but it can also be
becasue your browser does not understand or does not trust an element of the
page. A good example is JAVA and Active X. JAVA client needs to be
downloaded from the java.com site and ActiveX is typically not trusted to
run unless you click in the yellow notification bar at the top of the screen
to allow it.
