Hey folks

I recently got a promotion at work, and to celebrate have around £300 or so to buy myself a 'little something' to celebrate. I was thinking of buying something for one of my 2 pcs, which I mainly use for gaming but also for video encoding etc. My current setups are:

PC 1
E6850 CPU
9800 GX2 Graphics
Vista 32bit
4G DDR RAM (3 accessed by vista)
G15 gaming keyboard
Audigy 2ZS platinum sound card

PC 2
AMD 6600+ black edition cpu
280 gtx graphics
Audigy Fatal1ty sound
4 gig ram
Vista 64

Any thoughts? I'm up for any ideas! Can be a peripheral or a component. Go wild! Any ideas appreciated!

BTW my current thoughts are...

Update the 6850? I was toying with the idea of a Q9950 or similar. The AMD CPU is pretty slow at the mo, but there's little I can do with an AM2 mobo (not AM2+).

you mean the 9650?...

well instead of getting something for the pc1 get a better mobo for the amd...

What motherboard is the AMD unit running - AM2 motherboards ahould be able to run Phenom 2 CPU's - as long as there is BIOS support

upgrade it..dude your sitting on a gtx 280 running on an eh.. mobo.
if ya get a decent mobo and a decent cpu you'll be fine. plus whats your psu for the rigs?

Hehe I had a feeling someone might say that. I was hoping to hold off on upgrading mobo until i got an i7 when the prices fell a bit. Do you think the mobo will actually be a bottleneck for the 280gtx? Obviously the cpu could be, but I assumed the motherboard itself wouldn't be a bottleneck.

Your running a GTX 280 PCIe 16x 2.0 slot vid. card(one of the best cards out there) on a regular 16x pcie
i would think you need to upgrade the mobo. cheap one for $100 or less that mobo isnt even in stock anymore that you have.

Sorry - 6500+ amd black edition cpu. It's the unlocked overclockable one. Really appreciate your feedback - thanks for taking the time mate.

oh you live in the uk?

Yep :)

First, PCI-E 1.0 does not bottleneck with a full 16 lanes. The only potential problem is if the older motherboard cant push a new Phenom to all its 'glory'.

Personally, I would swap vid cards in those two rigs and get the Q9550 or Q9650 for the Intel rig. Hold off and in 6-12 months do a complete overhaul on the AMD box.

Would of said the same thing whast the mobo for the first pc?

Oh in relation to the PSUs, they're both on decent 1000w parts. Will check the Intel mobo when i get home.

Put the 280 on that setup, and you can get a nice Quadcore
!
