I've been trying to build a system mainly for running a lot of applications (so fast CPU/Memory, with help of OC), but I wouldn't mind some gaming support either.

From what I have gathered, I would be needing something like a Q6600 with an Asus P35 (Deluxe?), 4 GIGs of RAM, and a something like a Geforce 9600 GT.
I could overclock the Q6600 up quite a bit, but I don't care for getting the most out of it either. For that, I would be needing a stable OC setup.

I don't have sufficient knowledge on the current top brands/technologies, so I would appreciate it if someone could pick some parts for me, an possibly link them to probably newegg.ca.

As stated in the topic, my budget is 1000$ CDN.

Thanks,
Greg

Q6600
Gigabyte DS3R
4GB DDR2 800 CL4 Mushkin
HD3850 or HD4850 (just fit it to your budget)
Xigmatek HDT-S1283

hmmm...do you need to buy everything (casing, psu, monitor, etc.) or just the ones which I have mentioned? I choose those components because I assume that you have to buy all. BTW...how much are $1000 CDN to US or euro?

------------------------------ Intel Q6600 @ 3.0GHz + ASUS P5E X38 +
4GB DDR2 1000 CL5 Mushkin + Coolermaster Dominator Xcalade 690 + Corsair VX 450W + HIS HD 3850 512MB Turbo + Seagate 500GB 7200rpm 32MB + Zalman CNPS 9700 LED + Logitec EX110 + ASUS VW198S.

Thanks for the advice.

US dollars are very expensive for me lately (fluctuated in the past 3 months from 1.00 to 1.30 and now worth 1.21$ CDN) so it works to my disadvantage if I buy in US dollars. 1 Euro is worth 1.52$ CDN.

I should have been more specific with the exact part needs. I already own a 24 inch LCD 1920x1200, mouse keyboard, and need all the rest (though basic DVD RW, mid size SATA II hd, which I can probably yake care of myself).

Let me know what you think; don't want to ask for too much, but if you could include something like a two word description for each part as to why it is chosen, that would clarify a lot for me.

Is it worth buying higher clocked memory? From what I remember when looking at it, 1066MHZ isn't that much more expensive (unless it is for the type you specified).

Try www.newegg.ca, www.ncix.com or www.directcanada.com for Canadian pricing.

Ncix is a little more right now but they will price match.

Look at the HD4830 too for light gaming

WD320 or 640 gig hard drive

You could look for an Antec case/psu combo (usually with an Earthwatts psu)

Thanks r-sky.

I decided against the 4830 because the 4850 is only 17$ dollars more.

I picked a Seagate hd because it was the only one with a 32 mb cache.

My final setup looks like this:

SAMSUNG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model SH-S223Q $33.49
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive $92.49
SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card $197.19 - 20$ COUPON CODE
mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model 996580 $97.99
GIGABYTE GA-EP45C-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard $166.49
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model HH80562PH0568M $221.49
XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler $39.84

Combo: $86.93
COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UB Black /Blue Aluminum Bezel , SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus RS-500-PCAR-A3 500W ATX12V V2.3 Active PFC Power Supply

Total before shipping/taxes: $935.91 - 20$ COUPON CODE

Please let me know if someone sees anything wrong with this setup, or a better solution.

I just have two last big concerns.

Is it better to buy 800 MHz memory CL4 or 1066MHz memory, but CL5 for instance?
Or should I go for 1066MHz CL4? What is the answer to these with overlclocking?

And is it better to get Q8200 with 1333 MHz FSB and 45nm + new instructions? I figure the only reason not to is because I read that it won't overclock as well.
Can anyone provide some estimates on what OC speeds I can reach on the Q6600 and Q8200?
