My Sys Config
Core 2 duo 2.66 Ghz
Intel DP35DP
2 GB Ram
160 GB HDD
80 GB HDDSMPS 460 watts ( v2.2 , dual +12v output, passive pfc)
I recently purchased ATi radeon 4870 512 mb. I have 460 watts smps but specification on box says recommended 500 watts or more.Worrying about the spec. i have not yet attached the card.
I just want to know whether 4870 will work on 460 watts without any trouble. Or else what would be the worst case ?

Take a peek at the PSU rating sticker, it`ll tell us the amperage on, and number of, 12v rails available.
A good qulity 460W should handle it but give us its specs first.
The worst case is that the PSU will JUST handle the load but, like anything running at full power non-stop, will fail early and toast your entire rig. And yes it`s happened.

Yes we need to know the combined Watts on the +12V rails or the Amperage, preferably both.

Its Enterage
+12v1 +12v2 +5v +3.3v -12v +5Vsb
10A 14A 25A 20A 0.3A 2.5A
and its actually 450 watts. Amerpage , watts whatever .... does a Std 500 watts SMPS has all the requirements ?

Sounds like a generic PSU to me, dont like the look of the numbers either. I would recommend you get a new PSU for the 4870. Something branded like Corsair,Antec that is 80% certified and between 500-600Watts. Something like this unit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817371007

Im sorry I can't find the page right now, but as far as I remember the 4870 with a high end cpu max out at around 300 watts when gaming.

450 watt is fine.
