Suddenly cant access hard drive partition

Hello,
I have had this computer for several years. Today I had a problem saving on one partition, so I rebooted, and now it shows zero on that partition (it is a 500) and comes back at me with the question "do you want to format the drive?" This scares me that I have lost the data on that drive - everything else is working on the computer. I have AVG on the computer and I ran a scan - it didn't show much. HELP!!! My computer is XP

Sorry - my husband corrected me - it is not a partition, it is one of the original hard drives.

Thanks for the information. I did a chkdsk /f and now I cannot see the drive anymore. I was reading around and read that, but I should probably have had more information.
