More about windows resetting critical message restarts
  1. You can do the repair install, directions located in this XP forum, sixth post from the top.
The repair does not erase your personal stuff, and does not erase your programs, but it will reload the operating system, and set it back to default.
Most of the time, that will correct a critical error.

But also there is the possibility of a virus...after restoring operation, update and scan the entire computer with a professional antivirus

And then yet, on an old laptop, the hard drive could be worn out, and you might have to replace it or consider buying a new computer.

In any case, most people would be wishing they had backed up their personal files and photos, etc...
Be sure to make a backup of your personal files, as soon as the thing will start up
and run again, onto a thumb drive, or online backup service, will be very glad you made a backup if the hard drive quits (again)...

And in the case that all attempts fail, you can always use a computer tech or data recovery service.
