its not really a homebuilt pc question but i do this with my dell xps 630i and my homebuilt ( in the sig) sometimes,
i would like to know what is better for my pc's, everyday when im done should i shut down or can i leave them in sleep mode? i have windows vista power settings set to turn off monitor after 10 minutes and to go to sleep after 30 minutes.
if leaving them in sleep mode every night is bad then i wont do it anymore ill shutdown. thanks for any help/info
Sleep does not hurt the system and on modern systems even when sleeping the power use is about the same as off(most i have used shut fans, drives ect off). ATX power supplies still use a small bit of power when the system is off.
I hibernate my laptop all the time(XP). For my desktop i just shut it off at night and do not turn it on until i get home from work the next evening.
Bottom line, Its down to your preference. Sleep after 30 min may he a little early as the drives have to spin down more often, but that is also up for debate.

My computer is on 24/7 for over two years now. No sleep mode, no off (unless the power fails), reboot after updating windows is it. Leave it on, turn it off, I don't think it matters for modern systems.

Off is that strange powered down state some systems get when they do not want to suck 188 watts(my idle power use, my lappy is only 30) for nothing
