Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a new graphics card to play with. My resolution would be 1440x900 max. What card would you recommend me that will be a little future proofing and run at those resolutions. I'm not into crysis but something that can handle crysis would be nice. Thanks

hd 4850 should more than be future-proof for you man. it'll eat games on that resolution... you should also be concerned about bottlenecking..

...maybe a 8800gt should more than satisfy your needs

Why bottleneck? I'm getting and i7 by the way. Personally also thanks eklipz i know that every time i have question you answer. I know because of your avatar. >:D

The HD4850 is a very good general purpose and gaming card. It's not a hardcore frothing at the mouth gamers card, but a good card at the middling resolutions. At about $150 it's good bang for the buck, it out performs the 9800GT, underperforms the 4870/GTX260 216/GTX280/HD4850x2 and HD4870x2. If your budget is about $100 go with the 9800GT, if it's about $150 go with the 4850, if it's $210 go with the 4870. $240 GTX260 216 or 4870 1GB. Your budget will pretty much tell you what card to get.

lol no problem dude, i just answer whats easiest XD lol

but yeah i guess there's a settlement on 4850. core i7? you shouldn't worry about bottleneck lol

4850 isn't exactly the most hardcore card out there [obviously], but it should max out any game at that resolution, and play crysis on high [with playable fps of course]

Reply to eklipz330

It really depends on which MMORPGs you're talking about. WoW has very, very low requirements and a 9800GT is more than enough power for it. Heck, I played with everything maxed on a 6800GT OC and everything was smooth at 1680x1050.

On the other hand, EVERQUEST 2 is a game that will eat up all your ram and cpu. By design, EQ2 is more cpu intensive, and a multicore will really increase your fps. (especially since a recent patch included multicore support). Also, get at least 4GB ram and at least a 4850/9800GTX+.

I haven't played any of the newer MMOs like Age of Conan or Warhammer, but they are likely to be gpu intensive, so a minimum 4850/9800GTX+, and once again, at least 4GB ram.

Regardless of which game though, a good rule of thumb is to just get the best gpu that you can possibly afford.

Well i have a budget of about 800 dollars for the MB,CPU,RAM,and graphics. Everything else i have already bought. I was thinking if i drop the i7 i can get a better Graphics card but, Thinking of how the old tech is starting to die and the i7 is new hardware. I think it be smart of me to sacrifice a little money buy a cheaper Card and get at least the new stuff for now. Maybe then if i feel i need better then i can buy a better graphics card. What do you think?

As others have said, WoW will run on just about anything, while others aren't so easy to provide for. LOTRO is one of, if not the most demanding MMO under DX10, but it's b-e-a-utiful if you can crank everything up. A 4850 would give you playable settings in every MMO currently on the market for a very affordable price. Knowing exactly what games you're playing would help a lot here though...

The GXT260 216 stream processors is toe to toe with the GTX280
Nvidia made a little blunder when trying to compete with the 4870. this thing plays crysis maxxed with your resolution at 45fps and games like WoW at well over 200fps AoC 80-90ish
GFX-$259.99

still over $200 less then ur budget.

Hum so your saying. Hum..i'm confused. But if i buy i7 wont i get more room for upgrade, whereas if i buy this rig. Once i need a better CPU is practically over since i will never be able to update to nehalems right? Isn't that a bad thing? I just want to make sure i have something that in the future if i need something better i don't need to change all the hardware to make a new system. What do you think? I mean is not that i want to go against you is just i want to make sure where my money is going lol. Would it be a wise investment to buy outdated stuff or hold on a bit and go with the new then make it better as time goes by?

PCI x16/2.0 is the leading standard it will be for the foreseeable future. the Q6600 wont need to be upgraded in the life of the system it is plenty powerful theirs a good 2 years left in socket 775 as well as DDR2 you shouldn't need to upgrade anything major for at least 2 years and you can keep upgrading the video card until then the x58(its what supports the i7) still has the same PCI buss for video cards. Go with the system im telling you now and in 2years when the new chip set comes out you can think about upgrading then. The core i7 is not that far over the current gen of quad cores. beside 85% of gaming is the video card so even if you where to opt for the x58 you still going to upgrade the same parts. hope this makes sense.
