Hey I asked this on the NCIX forum but they seemed dead. So im going to copy and paste lol
Im trying to get an idea for a home server build, but im not exactly sure on what hardware i would need. I want to be able to access my home server from anywhere in the house and watch movies/anime from it.
Currently what are some of the best hardware to build this?
I currently have 15 HDDs atm that i just switch out back and forth on a TT BlackX HD Docking station but I want to make it so like my brother can watch my media from in his room.
Which Mobo would allow me to connect as many HDD as possible and which Case would go nicely together with it? I don't really want to run them in RAID because I rather have more space.
I have been looking at computer parts most of the day and can anyone tell me if this will all work out/ and suggest what i should replace instead etc.
1x Microsoft Windows Home Server OEM
1x Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 Dual Core Processor LGA775 2.5GHZ 800FSB 2MB Retail Box
1x Mushkin HP PC2-6400 HP2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-5-4-11 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit
1x ASUS P5Q Pro ATX LGA775 P45 DDR2 2PCI-E16 CrossFire 3PCI-E1 2PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN eSATA Motherboard
1x Antec Twelve Hundred Mid Tower Gamer Case 1200 ATX 12 Drive Bay No PS Top USB2.0 1394 Audio eSATA
1x Kingwin KF-2000-BK 3.5" SATA Hard Drive Hot Swap Mobile Rack W/ Cooling Fan
1x Syba PCI-3114-4IR-01 PCI SATA Controller Card 4-PORT W/ RAID 0/1/0+1/5 Software
1x Coolermaster Extreme Power 500W ATX 12V V2.01 Silent Power Supply 20/24PIN 120MM Fan
1x Sony AD-7200S 20X SATA DVD Writer Black DVD+RW 20X8X16 DVD-RW 20X6X16 DL 8X/12X Dual Layer OEM No SW
Should I stick with this dual core cpu?
Also this mobo has 8xSata port and i want to add that syba with a total of 12xsata. Which i will be adding 1 dvd drive + 11hd (non-raid just for storage)
will this work? (as i mentioned i have 15 hdd in static bags on my desk atm, i got 7x320hd, 6x500hd, 2x640hd that i want to put in this)
Also chose this case 'cause of the hd hot swap and will a 500psu be enough?
And another question, once i install WHS do i just connect a ethernet cable from the gblan into my router and it will be connected in my home network, is that usually how it works?
For the case is it a way to make it quiet as possible? like maybe taking out the fans that it comes with and also does the cpu need a heatsink? cheap one maybe?

So how did you build your home server. I am curious, cos I am trying to do what you probably did or were trying years ago.
Your experience and configuration will help me buy the right components
