Only 33.6 million (12 percent) of the 285 million television
sets in use in the United States are used to view
over-the-air television (OTA) programming, according to new
data released today by the Consumer Electronics Association
(CEA).

Hmm. Wonder where they got those numbers? According to the FCC, with
inputs from various sources, there are anywhere from 60 to 140 million
sets in the US receiving OTA.

The statistic is individual home TV's -- right? What about the additional
millions of viewers
whose CATV service provides locals via a headend that receives signals OTA?
I think
that not every rinky-dink cable company has a FODL from all of its locals.

Couple of points:
The statistic, as I point out, is questionable, Specious even. The CEA
statement was pure politics, trying to downplay the need for digital
tuners. Just trying to influence the FCC on their tuner mandate. See

Second, when I was last in the cable biz a few years ago, *most* of the
headends (in the US anyway) pulled *most* of their locals OTA - not
just the small systems but the big metro systems as well.
Anyway, to say that the cable subscribers were therefore getting them
OTA is quite a stretch.
