More about opinions suggestions build
  1. Well I think you missed the GPU??
Here are the things that I like:
CPU is good, even a e8500 will do quite well, depending on your applications of the PC are. Gaming??? e8500 is better, but if you have programs that take advantage of the extra 2 cores than the q9550 is nice!

I like your mobo selection. You could even go up a bit on your Gigabyte selection, but that is up to you.
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Case is good, but the PSU is way overkill for most situations, unless your going for a Crossfire setup??

Memory is nice, but that is CAS5 stuff (5-5-5-18), but the good part is it's only at 1.9v!! I prefer the faster and lower voltage (1.8v stock) Mushkin ones:
    $65 - $20 MIR = $45!!
    mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Things I still need to know, so I/we can make more recommendations:
    What is your budget??
What is the purpose of the build?? Gaming??
What is the resolution that your going to be using this computer for?? 17"/19"/22" Monitor?? 1280x1024/1440x900/1680x1050???
Are you going to OC anything??
  2. Thanks so much for the reply. My first post so it came out ugly and unclear, sorry.

Yes, forgot the graphics card, looking at a 4870, perhaps VisionTek? Don't do a lot of gaming so i don't see needing crossfire, but i have a couple of applications that are incredibly processor intensive (acoustic modeling) and can take all the cycles they can get, and are supposed to support multi-threading soon.

Don't expect to need the boost from two video cards, but might need the extra pci slots, so that's why i picked that board.

Power supply is overkill, but it was a good bundle with the case.

will review the memory, thank you.

Budget w/windows xp pro under 1500, preferably.

Probably 22" monitor, don't need extreme resolutions, would be happy to get recomendations on the monitor also.

Yes, I'd like to overclock, but that is down the road a bit, would like to get it running first :)

thanks so much for the reply!
  3. Yeah not sure what the first post said :) I think you asked about which hard drives... you want the AAKS model not AALS.

If you look at the link in my sig, you'll find lots of parts in the second post on the thread... I keep it updated.
  4. For the $ the q6600 is a good buy. the $130 savings is hard to pass up! You can OC it later and will run fine at stock speeds, so you won't need an aftermarket HSF right now. If you do get one, I'd recommend the Xigmatek s1283 CPU HSF w/retention bracket.

Since your going to be at 22" resolutions, I'd stick with the Antec 900 and the 650w PSU. The $70 savings could be put into a bigger LCD or use the extra $ for other upgrades or future upgrades.

With the CPU ($130) and the PSU ($70) savings, you could go up to a 24" monitor!! Then make sure you get at least a 4870 GPU to handle the higher resolutions!!

Now if your going with XP pro for software compatibility reasons, than getting 4 gb's won't be fully utilized. XP (32bit) Pro will only recognize about 3 gb's of the 4 gb's of RAM. Not sure if you want to do that or not, but if you want to fully utilize the 4 gb's, your going to need a 64 bit OS (Vista or XP).

    CPU - q6600 $190
Mobo - Gigabyte UD3P (my selection, you can get the one you like) $137 - $20 MIR
    RAM - Mushkin 2x2 gb's $65 - $20 MIR
    GPU - 4870 1gb version!! $290 - $20 MIR
ASUS EAH4870/HTDI/1G Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail
    Case/PSU - Antec 900/Antec 650w PSU $145
    CPU HSF - Xigmatek s1283 w/retention bracket $39
    HD - WD 640 gb AAKS $75
DVD Burner - LiteOn "Retail" version (software included) $30
    LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe - Retail
    LCD - 24" Acer LCD (1920x1200) $300
    Acer X243Wbd Black 24" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 400 cd/m2 3000:1 ACM with HDCP support - Retail
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit $100

Total w/shipping - $1391 - $60 MIR's = $1331!!! You could even drop in the q9550 if you wanted and still float under the $1500 price limit after the MIR's!!
