Hey
Having a strange issue with my Saphire 4850...And yes, ive changed the fanspeed (pretty easy with the new drivers) its at about 50%. When I play games the temps hit 95-100C and performance is terrible; this is strange as the card has always been fine. Its not overclocked, so Im not sure what could cause this sudden change.
Any ideas?

You need to reseat the heatsink. No big deal. Just buy some thermal compound and wipe off hte crap they apply at the factory. put a pea sized dab on the core and re assemble the heatsink assembly. Your temps should be fine after that.

If that doesn't work, make sure your case fans (and gpu fan) are working and not clogged with dust.

Thanks for the reply, I'll give it a go. However, do I need to get some thermal paste remover, or can I just scrape it off thoroughly with card?
Thanks

Did you update to Catalyst 8.11? Samething happened to my ASUS 4850 (suddenly temp hit 90's and game crashed) and updating driver seems to have fixed it though it's still running hotter than when I got it for some reason...

You can just scrape it off and wipe it with a cloth.

you could use WD40 and a wire brush

^^^^DO NOT DO THIS!!!^^^^^^

Do not listen to rangers. WD40 is oil based and fry your card!
The wire brush will scraper the smooth surface of the core and maybe break off the surface mounted resistors.

I wasnt going to anyway XD, if cpu's are anything to go by scratching the surface will do the opposite of lowering temps...
But I installed the new drivers, just to see, and as I expected no change. However I did remove the card from my case and try to unscrew the heatsink, but it was ridiculously tight! The screws wouldnt even budge...No idea what to do now, maybe I should contact saphire?
