[Sims 2] Balcony, roof questions

Hi everyone!

I recently received Sims2 as a gift, and I'm both enjoying and having
trouble with the new build mode tools.

I can't figure out how to do a plain balcony. I built a house, and on
the second floor didn't extend the walls all the way to the edges of
the first story. I put a railing and floor tiles out there, and that
used to be all I had to do to make a balcony in Sims 1. But now I
have a roof covering my balcony. I used an auto roof, because these
new roofing options are so confusing to me. If I added the roof
myself bit by bit, would it not put one on the balcony? Is there a
roofing tutorial anywhere?
