Overclocking a HD 5850 black edition?

I have a HD 5850 black edition (Which I got by accident, I ordered a normal clocked 5850 from a website and they accidentally gave me the black edtion) and I was thinking of overclocking it. The original HD 5850 is clocked at 725 Mhz core and 2000 Mhz mem. The black edition is clocked at 765 Mhz core and 2225 Mhz mem. I want to over clock it to the point where I will see a great performance increase, almost to the point where it performs like the 5870. But I don't want to overclock it to the point where It's life span will decrease sharply.

So my question is at what clocks do you think I should over clock it to? And do you think it's really necessary to overclock it more since the card is already factory oc?

If it runs well now.. and your happy with the performance then no. You won't see a huge differance in performance unless your looking at benchmarks and even then you won't see the type of gain your looking for. If you want to overclock give it a extra 5- 10 % make sure its stable and not overheating.

The black edition {Core Clock 765MHz } Effective Memory Clock 1125MHz (4.5Gbps)
Use MSI afterburner first off.
I have mine at {Core Clock 910MHz } Effective Memory Clock 1250MHz (5.0Gbps)

Doing as good Vapor-X HD 5870, and maybe a little better.

alrighty. i'll start diving in on the graphics once i get a couple better fans in the case. Graphics overclocking sounds alot harder as you have to sit and watch for artifacts and crap? Thanks!

When I set up MSI afterbuner, the fan I set at 40%, also you will see a button on the left side on the fan setting click this and it will bring open a new window, you can raise the fan up as the load goes up. I have mine at 75%, so in a game I have a head set on, and can not hear any fan noise. The highest temp I get in BC2 is 59C
I have tried 930 and 1300, but it locks up after 15mins or so.
I am happy with {Core Clock 910MHz } Effective Memory Clock 1250MHz (5.0Gbps)
doing what a 5870 doing it for 100 buck less.
Have fun OC

My Sapphire 5850 is at 985/1200. Even just at 1220 mem I get crashes, and I tried 1000 core but it artifacts. I had the voltage as high as 1.3V to see if it helped but still had issues. It's super stable as I have it now tho, and I think the voltage is around 1.2-1.25V.

I'm curious which versions of the 5850 people have to be able to get these OCs so much higher than mine. I don't let the temp get above 80C, I adjust the fan speed accordingly but no matter what I just can't seem to get above this threshold.

EDIT: Everyone who's posted a high OC, can you also mention what your Base Clock and QPI speeds are? I'm wondering if those affect video card stability.

Not all Chips were created equal.
Its not a Bad OC on your card but i understand your frustration to joining the :pt1cable:1000MHZ Club:pt1cable:

Its just your cards limit. Maybe a new cooling set would push you those last 25MHZ.

Nice OC and good luck!:D
