Hi all,

I have just built a new pc and am having some issues with my Powercolour HD4870 1GB and I wondered if you might be able to help me, here are the specs of the system:

C2d E8200 @2.66 GHz
Asus P5Q Pro
4GB OCZ DDR2 6400
500W Akasa Paxpower PSU
Vist 64 Bit SP1
Running the latest drivers straight off the ATI website

Basically whenever I run a game or switch to full screen video the GPU fan spins up to max speed (sounds like a bloody jet engine), the screen goes blank (no signal into the monitor) and the it crashes. It happens pretty much immediately and sometimes when I get into windows as well. The whole thing runs fine doing stuff in windows and idle temps are ok , the only issues are when it is asked to do anything to do with graphics. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
R

I would change that power supply. What are your video card temperatures like?

ATI Radeon HD 4870 System Requirements

500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (600 Watt and four 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products.

The card temps are fine (for this card anyway) at idle and understandably I can't check the temps at load because there is nothing to see. I had a look at the spec of the PSU on the akasa site and it says it can supply a maximum of 420W on the 12V rail which I assume is what the PCI express connectors (there are two) run off. Surely this is enough? Would a lack of power cause this problem?

Thanks for your replies.

Ok just checked on the ATI site and the minimum Akasa PSU recommended is a 1000W beast, I gues I'll be dropping 80 quid on a new one then.

Cheers for the help
