what is the best codec pack?

CODEC PACKS ARE EVIL. NEVER EVER INSTALL ONE.

The only decoder you should ever need is FFdshow. (ffdshow-tryouts)
So your best options for a htpc are:

Media player classic + ffdshow-tryouts (the best.. also supports DX video acceleration)
VLC (Doesnt rely on direct show filters.. but has really crappy MKV and H264 support)
Mplayer (really awesome, doesnt rely on directshow filters and has many many front ends)

Personally I like the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack). It works great with, and includes, Media Player Classic HC.

I recommend if you do k-lite you do the mega version. It doesn't seem to play subtitle files in the same folder as the video without some markova add on that's related to the group that does CCCP, so you may want to just get that one.

ffdshow is good but outdated. I used to use it alot until I got JetAudio Plus which comes with a whole bunch of codecs anyway.
I've heard nothing but good things about VLC, but have never used it.

"ffdshow" IS outdated, and discontinued.

"ffdshow-tryouts" is the continuation of that project. It is more up to date than VLC... theyre both built around ffmpeg.

Klite contains multiple conflicting decoders for the same codecs.. as do many codec packs. In fact most codec packs (including klite) include ffdshow. Ask your self, what would you play that ffdshow cant play? the only other decoder you might want is a better h264 decoder (ie "coreavc")

First, again, I've installed Klite before, I've never had an issue with it. Second, there are multiple decoders for the same thing, but by default it only installs one. Unless you are dumb enough to select them all, it won't cause any issues to use it.

Personally I use VLC. While I agree that GOM has better looking video, I don't like the interface. But I do think its wrong to tell people not to use Klite. It will work, and it shouldn't cause any issues.

Why bother at all with klite? You can get the latest builds of MPC-HC and FFdshow-tryouts off of sourceforge. You can even get the x64 builds.

And yes, Klite is known to cause problems when it comes to encoding video. albeit only when using a VFW codec (who still using AutoGK these days)

And AFAIK, ALL of the media players (including VLC, GOM) and general purpose encoders that claim things like 99% of all video compatibility... are all based off of the ffmpeg project.
