AMD 64bit dual core CPU and ECC DDR RAM are used in a workstation. If power supply is lost, a backup battery can maintain data in RAM, but other devices (CPU, hard disk, ...) couldn't work any more. I found sometimes BIOS reported ECC errors after power failure and rebooting the machine again. Is it possible that ECC errors are produced when power is lost and CPU is writing some data (or flushing data from cache) to RAM at the same time?
Thanks.

No, the OS cannot create ECC errors. This is an error that occur inside the DIMMs that the memory controller picks up.

Are ECC errors only caused by hardware, not software?
By the way, if ECC RAM losts power for a very short while (less than one microsecond), could ECC errors be produced?
Thanks.
