Speed usb vs hd

Hello,
i want to record multi-track audio on my pc. people say directly recording to hd shortens the life of of my hd. but is recording straight to usb a better choice?

By "HD" do you mean the hard drive inside your computer?
And by "USB" do you mean a USB Thumb Drive?

Writing to a hard drive has no effect on it's life expectancy whatsoever. But you can only write to a Thumb Drive so many times (several thousands).
