Cd dvd drive not working properly

Hello,
my cd/dvd rom only plays dvd discs. attempts to play cd's will even cause the machine to go off. Kindly help to fix the problem.

It sounds like the infrared laser in your drive is burned out. The drive has different lasers to play CDs vs. DVDs, and it's not uncommon for one of them to burn out before the other.

Your best bet is probably just to buy a new drive. They're so cheap that it would be more expensive to pay for a repair.
