When I boot up my system, the Welcome to Windows XP screen (and where you
can select which user will be using the computer) shows how many new mail
messages are in my mail box. But when I go to my mail application (Outlook
Express) the number of new mail messages does not match the information
contained in the "user selection screen".

Can this be corrected?

Recent article about this in the forum. A couple of methods listed there.
You'll want to reset the data in order to fix this, that should do it for
you.

XP says I have four messages unread:
