Greetings,

I'm looking at the Samsung 2253BW 22" LCD to finish my new gaming system and was wondering if it's worth buying it online. My understanding is that Samsung will not take a monitor back unless there are 5 or more dead pixels.

Am I more or less likely to find dead pixels on a recertified item compared to a new one because it underwent a second quality review??

Ecost has a recertified one here

Oh yeah.. is the Saphire HD 4850 worth the $150?

Any feedback regarding the acquisition of a gaming LCD would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

1. The Samsung is one of the best monitors in 22"
2. I wouldn't bother with a recertified monitor (this is one of the things you want new, as new usually has
a warranty listed in years, the recert is 90 days at most)
3. That dead pixel policy is pretty standard for most brands (almost all)
4. yes that is a good price for the 4850.

Personaly I buy all my PC parts online (AAFES wastes us* money every day on electronics, if they even have anything recent that is)

* military (regardless of branch).

I've bought 4 monitors online over the past 10 years or so. Never had a problem (all were Samsung), and will do it again when I tire of my 24" Sammy!

Ive bought 4 lcd's online. 19" BenQ, 20.5" BenQ, 22" Asus, and 22" Acer. Never had a dead pixel, however the Asus I had to send back because the day I got it I was adjusting the menu and the button got stuck. I sent it back and got the Acer instead and I'm very happy. Newegg gave me full credit, no re-stocking fee, and even sent me a pre-paid return shipping label without me even asking.

I bought a 22" Samsung last year on Black Friday.

It ended up having 1 stuck pixel that I was able to actually fix with a program designed to do so.

If you want the value and savings of shopping online, you gotta cross your fingers and accept the risk.

I've been wondering lately if there is a reliable way to 'kill' a pixel or few, in the event that you have just 1 or 2 dead, and you need 5 to get an RMA.

To myter, scuff the screen (instant RMA). Just don't gouge it too deeply, and complain the box/packaging was damaged when you got it.

I wouldn't worry about it for the price they are right now online they are very very cheap. I just got my Acer 22" from Newegg for $149.99 during the black friday sales(free shipping too!) I am happy with it, the colors are a bit off but that's transferring from a 19" CRT so I'm happy overall. IMO Samsung seems to be overpriced, but if you have the money and think there is more quality with them go for it.

I know the etailer/vendor (ie: newegg or whoever) would have to take it back in that case (within their return policy time frame, of course), but will a manufacturer give an RMA in a case like that? I'm doubtful...

Do some google searching for 'LCD monitor calibration' and you should be able to fix those colors up.

I've bought 2 LCDs online. One had a stuck bright blue pixel near the center, but was intended as a spare. The other would have become a spare if it had bad pixels, but there were none so it became my primary display.
If you buy from a brick and mortar store, you may be able to return it if there are any dead pixels, or you may be able to test it before purchase.

If you buy online for less money and get a bad pixel or two, that was the risk you took, and is no excuse to commit fraud, so suck it up.

A monitor is the one thing i buy local, if you can cruise by BB often you can find a clearance or floor model that will match or beat any online store. I got my Samsung 26" for $250. Never saw that at a web store even on Black Friday

Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

I'm going to make a last ditch sweep of local computer retailers to see if there is a super discount- otherwise I'll buy online.

Cheers,

Scott
