Why does my Volume keep getting muted

Hello,
Is there a setting I am not using? It keeps going to the Mute all and ticking it when I haven't done anything. This is an XP laptop.

You are probably hitting a key combination that mutes your sound. All laptops have special key combinations to mute, raise, or lower the sound, so just look at your keyboard to figure out what mute is so you can be more careful.

Thanks, Good suggestion but I can't find in my Dell Inspiron 9400 instructions any reference to key combinations muting the volume. But I also can't locate the up down volume keys so maybe if anyone knows those???
