No CD rom

What would cause my Sony Dvd/CD drive (DRU-710A) to work only as a dvd drive. It will not read cd's any more. I even tried to boot from a cd so that the operating system would not be involved. I tried to switch czbles znd I tried another dvd drive.

It may have multiple lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs, and have the CD laser system broken.

Well given that dvd drives cost so little why not buy another one and recycle your sony ??

Try updating the firmware.

Otherwise get a SATA DVD-RW for about $25.00.

Having tried a second dvd drive I'm concerned that it is a motherboard or bios problem. Not the dvd drive. What are the chances both drives have failed the same way.

Good. Sounds like you have a bad IDE controller on the motherboard.

I went and bought a new Dvd/Cd drive. With the new drive installed I now get the cd drive to work but it will not read dvd's. This couldn't get any more confusing. I believe it's time for a new computer.

I'm just trying to rule out the obvious, did you double check that it's also a DVD ROM?

Buying a new PC b/c of a optical problem is a bit drastic.

They are all Ide drives (ATAPI/E-Ide). The new one I purchased was a Liteon 22X Internal DVD / CD writer model iHAP322-08 8.

So this new lite-on drive reads cd's but not dvd's?

Did you try a few different dvd's?
