I'm thinking of buying a new desktop and putting it together myself - first time :ouch:
I only play Counter Strike 1.6 but may play more games in the future - so would need an-ok graphics card.
I also need a monitor preferably widescreen. I have a budget of £1000 and will be ordering from www.ebuyer.co.uk unless anyone knows a better website.

So far I've been thinking of getting:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor and OCing it to 3.0 GHz

9800GT 512mb

or

Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB

OCZ

or

Everything else I've no idea on...

I'm not sure whether I'll need a soundcard - but I also need a set of speakers(2.1)

PS I think I will use Ubuntu 32bit for the OS

if you are dead set on using a 32bit OS, then get 2gig ram. If not, 4gig will do you wonders.
I suggest an HD4870:

It'll last you longer than a 9800.

For the PSU, antec neopower 550w should be plenty.

motherboard P45 for a single card (with the option to add a second vid card) P5Q Pro:

Get whatever case suits you visually and you should have a pretty good deal.

The option of 64bit Ubuntu is available too so I might do that and go for the 4gig.

Do you recommend the P5Q Pro or the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P? link below

I'm not too sure on the graphics card you linked antiacid - just it seems overkill for my usage, that and another £100.

Also found a 20" LCD Widescreen monitor with good reviews. Anyone else recommend it too?

Both of those mobos are reputable and should fly with the Q6600. The 9800GT is good enough for the monitor but you can't add another card for SLI with the mobo. You can probably find a 9800GT with a free copy of Farcry 2 or something too. :)

then you might consider a 4850 instead. For the screen, i'd say go for a 22inch WS if you can. 1680x1050 is great :)

+1 for the HD 4850. Actually, with that budget you should be able to get even a HD 4870. Get a Corsair 650W or 750W power supply, and then you'll be able to add a second card when you need it.

You don't need a sound card.

Between the P5Q Pro and the UD3P I'd pick the P5Q Pro because it has more SATA ports. If you're not a major space hog and can live with a burner and 5 hard disks then the UD3P is perfect too.

This is what I've decided to pick now. If there's anything else I'll need to buy seperate due to some parts being OEM - please do say! Thanks!

Oh, and will I need any more fans in the case?

No need for extra fans with that Antec 900.

The motherboard should come with SATA cables for at least one HDD and a burner, so that's OK too.
