Hey folks, I'm building a gaming machine for my son and it's my first build. I've done a good bit of hardware/software stuff over the years, but always upgrades to system machines. My 15 year old is into PC gaming and 3D mapping and needs a better machine. I should have posted before ordering, but time was short and his birthday is close. I did a lot of reading and research and here's where I'm at:

Antec nine hundred
Antec True Power Trio 550W
E8400
Asus P5Q Pro
4GB RAM - OCZ 2x2 800MHZ DDR2 PC2-6400

He's already got a XFX 8600 GT card that I was hoping to use until Christmas. We'll probably upgrade that to a 4850 or 4870. Also going to re-purpose a couple of SATA drives and a DVD writer, but the jury's still out...

Anything I need to rethink? I'm going to build another one for myself later this year, so if a component is way off, I'll reconsider.

Thanks,
Tony

The PSU is not the greatest quality. Other Antecs are good but that Trio last i read had some major problems with it. Otherwise its an awesome build.

If ur son is into gaming def. change that vid card when u can :D hell be rly happy

the 8600GT is pretty much dead even with the 7600GT, which isn't fast at all. but other than that, it looks like a solid build. but as silverion said, a better power supply may be a good idea, especially if you plan to upgrade the graphics.

Dooh... :ouch: Back to the search engine. lol

The Trio is probably OK if you got a good deal on it.

There is a Gigabyte board out now that's better than the P5Q Pro, but that's certainly not a bad choice.

As long as the board has no issues recognizing the RAM right off you'll be fine there... would not be my choice.

Thanks! I somehow missed those threads... Good stuff. You guys have pretty much convinced me to try the Sapphire 4850. Any issues with the above setup?

Maybe you can point me to some how to stuff. I'm not looking forward to figuring out the bios flash stuff.

Good set-up, gonna be weak in the graphic card department till you upgrade. The Sapphire is a good choice, decent aftermarket cooler and your case has very good cooling.

OK. Here's the latest thought based on some of the recommendations. Better?
