Formatting HDD

Hello, my external hard drive isn't allowing me to access files, telling me tht i must format it. if i format it, i will lose everthing, right? how can i retrieve my files/back it up and then format it?

try with some other PC or give a try with LIVE XP that comes with Hirens boot cd
