OK ! here are my SPEC !

P5n32e-SLI+
WCed E6850 @ 3.6ghz
4g DDR2 800 Gskill Pi-black 4-4-4-12 1t
SLI BFG 9800GTX+ OC (stock 760)
600W TT toughpower
For a something good 16521 3dmark06

Im currently looking at the Q9650. Seems to be an AWESOME CPU. 12mb cache .. Ive read alot about CACHE. and seems to be very used to improve performance in programing. its fast memory, used before RAM if the needed information is stocked in it. SO if more CACHE, program can run smoother and faster ? whats about games ? I can actually run any games with a lot of AA and ultra high setting @ 1680x1050.

CLOCK fo CLOCK im going to run it the same way. 400fsb X 9 = 3600 but with 3x the cache ! and less Vcore...

BUT !!! its a 400$+ ( cad : canadian dollar ) processor. you guyz think its going to worth it ? or should i just keep my E6850 till I7 are cheaper and change MOBO-CPU-RAM-CPU block ..... currently a near 1000$ upgrade ... thats why im looking at the Q9650. If anyone here have similar spec with a Q9650 it could help me alot ;)

I recently had this problem while building a gaming rig for a friend of mine, after looking into we opted to get an i7 920 as a deal here meant we could get the Asus P6T-deluxe + 6GB DDR3 1333MHz for around £450.
The overclocks we are getting on air are brilliant its stable at 3.6GHz running on air.
So i would wait to get a similar sort of deal or shop around more.

If I were you I would save for a Core i7 or wait a little bit longer and see what AMD Phenom II AM3 brings. Your E6850 is still doing good in games and other stuff. Unless you do a lot of video encoding, I don't see why you should go for a Q9650 now. Or simply get a combo deal off newegg for the Phenom II 920 or 940 with a AM2+ motherboard that is guaranteed to support AM3 CPU's so you can still use your current DDR2 but get a better CPU. Check out the Phenom II 920 or 940 combos on newegg. You can get a motherboard and CPU starting from $260.

Buying a Q9650 now would be a stupid waste of money. You'll be fine with the set-up you have now. Wait a few months and see what Phenom II AM3 brings, realy. Being a camp fan is just stupid, just go for the best price/performance or performance in general, if it's AMD then so be it. I prefer Intel too but AMD stole my heart with the 940. I'm waiting to see what AM3 will bring anyway so...

Ill wait to see AM3. If AM3 looks awesome maybe ill try AMD for the second time...

http://techblog.gr/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/intel-core-2-quad-q9650.jpg

The Q9650 is a Multi-Chip Module. It cannot out perform a quad core CPU because it suffers from a bandwidth bottleneck between the two dual cores. Awesome CPU? I don't think so!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivx0XYMCZJw

The Q6600 is also a Multi-Chip module. That's why it lost the contest.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwcKyrHHQac

Ci7 965EE/3.2GHz LGA1366 6.4 GT/s $1079.99

X4 940 / 3.00GHz Socket AM2+ 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) $239.99

$840 dollar difference just between the two CPUs.

Why waste your money on obsolescence with Intel when you can save money with AMD?

AMD has it.

To the OP - just ignore enigma67, unless you like reading troll-posts :).

As long as you're waiting for AM3, you might wait for the D0 stepping of i7 920. From the posts over at Xtremesystems it looks to be maybe as good as the G0 stepping was for the Q6600. Not that Intel needed it, but it should be more than offset any gains that the P2 945 might get on an AM3 system.

Anyway, the D0 steppings should be out in June. I was planning on waiting for 32nm Westmere but if the i7 920 D0 is in the low $200 range by June, I'm jumping on it, and do a drop-in upgrade to Westmere later if I wanted to.

An i7 setup would be more futureproof than a 775 socket, or an AM3 setup too for that matter, since there's a chance AMD may not be around this time next year...

I'm going to say that if there's nothing you need a quad-core for at the moment, go ahead and wait a while for I7 to drop in price. You have a good system; forget upgrading and go play some games!

OP,

I am in the same boat as you.

Run the wheels off your current system and save your $$ for the i7.
You have a good set-up. Throwing money at it is not going to make much of a bang.
If you just can't hold off get a 260GTX 216 core or 280GTX etc, to complement the i7 when you get there.

im quite happy whit my SLI setup. i can run any games whit full AA.
ill wait till I7 is cheaper. THX alot everyone ! + I7 is better for SLI ! :D

Saw in another thread here that DDR3-1333 is down to $150 for 6GB - still expensive compared to DDR2 but heading in the right direction :).

I'm sure that the X58 mobo's will be cheaper by June as well. Saw one for $200 a couple weeks ago, but as I recall it was a bit skimpy.

Anandtech has an i7 buyers guide out now, if you're interested.

As I stated previously, I'm waiting till June to get the D0 stepping of the i920, plus the 40nm GPU video cards should be out by then (at least the ATI cards are supposed to be - nVidia might be later this summer). And with AMD's AM3 systems out, DDR3 should fall even further in price.

Besides, if you live in the USA, Obama's stimulus checks from the IRS should arrive by then too :).
