I have a ASUS V2-P5G43 barebones unit which allows for 8GB of memory.
It currently has 4GB of dual memory installed but I would like to upgrade it to 8GB. (it is running cent os 64, so the OS can handle the memory)
My question is can it support 4GB of dual memory and 4GB of single memory(which going from the manual appears to be the case but I am not sure) or does it need 8GB of single memory?
Thanks for hopefully pointing me in the right direction.
2 identical sticks of the same size and speed ram will work in dual channel mode. As long as each pair is the same, there's no difference between dual or single channel memory in performance. The board chipset and position of the sticks determines whether you're running in single or dual channel mode.
currently I have 2 identical dual channel memory. which is why i would need to go single mode for the other 2(as it does not support 4 sticks of dual) but my question is can it support 2 sticks dual and 2 sticks single or does it need 4 sticks single?
How can you go single channel if you install 2 identical modules in the same channel? By default they should run in dual channel, unless the system can run dual only for one channel and not for the other one (which I've never seen before, but it's possible).
You are correct; 2 GB single sided modules don't exist. According to the manual (section 2.5.1), you can use 2 DS, 2 SS plus one DS or SS or 4 SS modules. You can't use 2 DS plus 2 SS. I would only buy modules listed on the QVL as it seems somewhat picky (several modules/combinations are marked as Fail on the QVL).
