Writing to disk

Hello,
I have a n HP computer, with a Samsung cd recorder, a Philips dvd recorder and a usb flash drive/ Drive recognize and run apps but if i want to record i get the message to insert disk. This seems to happen a lot judging by the queries, and the only answer i've seen is to use disk manager. Doesn't work because it does'nt see the disk including flash drive. Need help!
